Why Outdoors?

That’s simple – being outdoors is good for you! And it is brilliant watching children develop into young people who are strong, fit and healthy with a love for, and confidence in, the outdoors.

Remember that the critical age of influence for engaging children with the outdoors is before the age of 12 years old. A child’s experience and confidence in the outdoors directly impacts on their ability to engage with the outdoors as an adult.

Research suggests that, whilst children spend more time than ever using electronic technology, they would still prefer to play and learn in the outdoors if they had the choice. Sadly, there has been a marked decrease in the amount of opportunities that children now have to enjoy the outdoors and this is impacting negatively on children’s physical and emotional well being. Bearing this in mind it is therefore, essential that we provide the right opportunities for children during the primary sector.

Through regular use of the outdoors the advantages to the education of children are wide ranging. Some of the benefits include:

  • Development of pupils’ emotional and physical wellbeing.
  • Provision for more, able and talented children.
  • Development of pupils’ personal and social skills.
  • Development of pupils’ physical skills and abilities.
  • Stimulating children’s curiosity and inquiring minds.
  • Creating a focus and/or stimuli for classroom based activities e.g poetry writing.
  • Develop knowledge of healthy schools and sustainable development.

The Evidence Base

There is a large body of evidence to support the value of outdoor learning in four key area. These are interrelated and overlapping.
